Overview

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure done to change the size and shape of the labia. This procedure is normally done for women looking to change their labia’s general appearance. This is procedure is done more for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes rather than for improvement in functionality.

Most patients who undergo this operation are women with excessive labia or those who believe their labia does not belong to the acceptable range of appearance. Women who experienced tearing from childbirth or accident may also undergo labiaplasty.

There are many labiaplasty procedures, here’s a list of what can be done:

Edge resection technique

Edge resection is the removal of any protuberance of the labial tissue resulting in a smoother appearance. This is the easiest of the procedures involved and the one most patients come in for with positive results.

Central wedge resection technique

This is the removal of a partial thickness wedge of tissue from the thickest portion of the labia minor. This results in a cleaner, smaller exterior and a natural contour for the patient’s genital area.

De-epithelialization technique

This is used to reduce the size of the labia. There is a risk of affecting the sensory and erectile tissues in the genital area.

Labiaplasty with clitoral unhooding

This is done to uncover or make the clitoris more prominent through suturing. This tightens the labia minora as an after effect.

Other variations of labiaplasty are available upon consultation with our labiaplasty surgeons.

What to Expect

An initial consultation will be done to assess what you essentially need for functionality with a secondary assessment done for the aesthetic purpose of the operation.

Treatment is highly dependent on the degree of looseness of skin, amount of excess skin, age, and other factors.

There is a general risk of bleeding and scarring. Sensations may also change. They may become heightened or numb.

General anaesthesia will be used during the procedure and dissolvable sutures will close off the operated areas.

After Surgery / Recovery

Pain after the surgery may be mild to a moderate degree of discomfort. Swelling may occur but this can be alleviated with the use of cool packs. Swelling should subside after a week or so.

Your sutures are designed to dissolve over time, there is no need for a postoperative session for the removal of the sutures.

As with all types of surgical procedures, caring for the areas where sutures were made is the highest priority. Following your labiaplasty surgeon’s instruction for the proper care of affected areas is highly advised.

Use petroleum jelly and panty liners to protect the labia from foreign objects and wear breathable, cotton and non-restrictive clothing during the healing period.

Physical activities should be avoided during the healing period. The slow reintroduction of physical activities is advised once the healing period is done.

Physical therapy will be introduced gradually for muscle strengthening and fortifying the areas operated on.

You may need to take time out of work to allow for faster healing.
