Overview

Breast reduction is done for women who experience chronic back, neck and/or shoulder pain from bearing the weight of oversized mammaries. Women who come to us are those looking for relief from carrying an excess of weight. This not only affects women physically, it also has a psychological effect as most women with enlarged breasts believe they are grotesquely misshapen.

Unlike other cosmetic breast operations, this can be fully covered by your health insurance as this condition impedes with your normal day to day activities.

There have been improvements made over the years to this type of surgery reducing the length of the incision made and in effect the scarring results. We have continued to develop our techniques to ensure all patients receive the best products and services from our facility.

N

N
Women who have breasts that are proportionally too large for their frame and as a result suffer from chronic back, neck and shoulder pain.
N
Women who have reduced mobility due to the size of their breasts.

What to Expect

An initial consultation will be done to assess what you essentially need for functionality with a secondary assessment by our breast reduction surgeon done for the aesthetic purpose of the operation.

Pictures may be taken for comparison purposes or for the surgeon to assess how best to shape your breasts.

Your medical history will be examined to ensure that you are physically able to undergo the operation.

This procedure is done under a general anaesthetic.

An incision is made around your nipple and then downward in the form of a keyhole. It is from this incision that extra skin, tissue and fat are removed. The nipple is then repositioned to ensure proper alignment.

A drain will be installed to syphon off excess fluid and binding will be used to keep your breast in place for the first few hours after the operation.

After Surgery / Recovery

As with all types of surgical procedures, caring for the areas where sutures were made is the highest priority. Following your breast reduction surgeon’s instruction for the proper care of affected areas is highly advised.

Pain management can be administered by hospital staff or by the patient. It can be oral or through intravenous methods.

Physical therapy will be introduced gradually for muscle strengthening and fortifying the areas operated on.

Swelling may occur. Use ice packs for pain relief. Wrap ice in several layers of cloth to avoid ice burn.

Loss of sensation may occur up to 3 months while the local nerves heal. Depending on the amount of breast tissue removed, you will feel a little lighter.
